What is a gemologist?
Laurene Gobet
Are you familiar with this profession? What studies are required to obtain this qualification? What can one do with this knowledge?
When we talk with our friends, family and strangers, few people know what a gemologist is, so I decided to talk about my studies and my practical experience to help you understand better?
Indeed, this profession is not common, and the studies required to obtain this title vary considerably. For example, there are courses lasting only 3 weeks to 1 month, allowing you to call yourself a gemologist, in contrast to the two years of study I undertook, which grants the same title but, as you can imagine, involves very different content.
There are two institutes that oversee several international schools: the GIA (Gemology Institute of America), which also certifies many of the most famous gemstones, and the AIGS (Asia Institute of Gemology). In addition, there are various diplomas available, including specializations in colored gemstones, diamonds, business, research, etc.
Personally, I spent two years studying at AIGS in Bangkok, I was literally immersed in the world of gemology.
I studied from … to …. And here is what I experienced there:
The materials were as follows…
- What I particularly liked and why.
- An extraordinary experience.
- The largest stone I was able to analyze
- An astonishing discovery.
