Surprise ring: how to discreetly discover your perfect size.
Laurene Gobet
I'm going to tell you the story of a friend who wanted to propose to his partner, and do it as a complete surprise. She mustn't suspect a thing, and it had to be perfect.
The most difficult thing was knowing her ring size… how could I do that when she doesn't wear any jewelry?
So it's entirely possible thanks to photography, geometry and a few simple rules of three.
First, you need to choose which finger the engagement ring will be worn on. Generally, it's worn on the ring finger of the right hand, the same finger as the wedding band; however, there's no hard and fast rule, and depending on the type of engagement and wedding ring, you can't wear both on the same hand.
So the choice is yours, bearing in mind that the right and left hands are not identical, so there may be slight size differences. However, a jeweler can always adjust the size if you suddenly need to switch the engagement ring to the other hand.
So you've chosen which finger you want to put the ring on!
Get out your best camera and take lots of pictures of her hands; ideally, take pictures where she's holding something whose exact size you know. For example, a cup, her phone, the steering wheel of her car, etc.
Then you calculate…
A little tip: be very precise and take lots of photos.
Standard size: 52mm to 57mm circumference
